How to Gift a Thoughtful Massage (And Why It Matters)

I'm biased, but I think massages make wonderful gifts. I give them to celebrate milestones, to offer support during difficult times, and to say "thinking of you" to friends and family far away. Over the years, I've gotten countless emails asking how to find a great massage therapist when gifting to someone in another city—or even how to choose one locally.

Here's the truth: not all massages are created equal. A rushed 50-minute session at a chain spa feels very different from an hour with a skilled, present therapist who actually listens to what your body needs. As we head into the gifting season, here are my tips for finding and giving a massage gift that truly lands.

Ask About Their Favorite Therapist (If They Have One)

I know surprise gifts can be fun, but with massage, there's a better approach: if someone already has a therapist they love and see regularly, a gift certificate to that person is a home run. They already trust them. They already know the space feels safe. You're removing friction and saying "yes, keep doing what's working."

If you want to keep the surprise element, ask mutual friends for a recommendation to their favorite therapist. That's the sweet spot.

If they don’t have a favorite massage therapist yet, gift them a session with your favorite massage therapist. You already know and love their work and hope your friend might find benefit too!

Shop Local and Small

It's tempting to go with a big spa or nationwide chain as a "safe bet." But here's what I've seen after years in this work: people are far more likely to actually use and return to a small, local practice where they receive personalized attention and genuine care.

Check out independent massage therapists and small wellness studios in your recipient's area. The difference in experience is usually significant—and worth the extra effort to find. Plus, you know I love supporting local with our dollars for gifts (massage or otherwise!) whenever possible. If you live here, obviously we would love to work with you or your recipient! BUT - how do you find a great massage therapist if your friend doesn’t live locally?

Look for Credentials and Professional Standards

Finding a great therapist gets easier when you look for these markers:

When therapists maintain standing with these organizations, they've committed to continuing education, ethical standards, and rigorous professional guidelines. That matters.

Consider Special Needs and Preferences

This is where thoughtfulness really shines. Take a moment to think about what your recipient actually needs:

  • Gender preference? Some people feel more comfortable with a massage therapist with a specific gender identity.

  • Accessibility? Does the recipient have mobility considerations? Is the office accessible, or does the therapist offer in-home sessions?

  • Pregnant or postpartum? Look specifically for therapists certified in prenatal or postpartum massage. This specialty makes a huge difference in the comfort of the massage therapist and the quality of the massage your friend will receive.

  • Specific concerns? Athletes might benefit from sports massage. People with chronic pain might need someone trained in pain-informed care. Someone recovering from surgery needs gentle, knowledgeable hands.

Matching the right therapist to the right person transforms a nice gift into an exactly-what-I-needed gift.

Gift Certificates or Pre-Scheduled Sessions?

Decide what works best for your recipient:

Gift certificate: Great for people who want to schedule at their own pace and have control over timing. Many therapists (including us!) offer digital gift certificates you can purchase and print or even send instantly. You can find ours here.

Pre-scheduled session: Perfect for people who struggle with scheduling or who need a gentle push to prioritize self-care. You handle the logistics; they just show up.

⬆️⬆️⬆️Honestly, the pre-scheduled session is really only the best option if you are the partner or parent of the recipient, you know you can clear the recipients calendar, and you can provider childcare if there are children. Otherwise, it’s best to let someone schedule their own session to when it will feel most relaxing to them.

Amplify the Gift With Thoughtful Additions

A massage gift is already saying "I want to support you in taking care of yourself." You can make it even more powerful by removing barriers to actually receiving that care:

  • For busy parents: Arrange childcare during the massage so they can fully relax

  • For a college student: Add a rideshare credit so getting there feels easy

  • For anyone: Pair the massage with a coffee shop gift card and suggest they spend the whole afternoon on self-care—massage, then coffee and a book or a walk

  • For someone grieving or stressed: Include a handwritten note explaining why you thought they needed this specific care right now

These additions say: "I see you're overwhelmed. I want to remove friction. You deserve this."

Expand Beyond Massage for Whole-Person Care

If your recipient is pregnant, postpartum, or preparing for birth, consider gifts that complement massage care:

Whole-person care during big life transitions is more powerful than any single modality.

Gift to Yourself Too

Here's what I've noticed: people are amazing at gifting care to others and terrible at receiving it themselves.

After buying gift certificates for everyone on your list, pause.

What do you need? A massage to ease holiday stresses? Acupuncture to calm your nervous system? Simply an hour of uninterrupted time in a space designed for your comfort?

Gift that to yourself. You deserve it just as much as anyone else on your list.

The Bottom Line

A thoughtful massage gift says: "Your body matters. Your rest matters. You matter." That's a gift worth giving.

Whether you're shopping for someone local or far away, I hope these guidelines help you find a massage (or other bodywork) gift that truly lands. And if your recipient is in Boulder or Lafayette, we'd be honored to be their therapist.
